How to Protect Your Patio Furniture This Winter

admin • September 1, 2018

If you live in a really warm location, you probably don’t give a lot of thought to how your patio furniture fares during the winter season. If you live in an area that has a lot of rain and snow during the fall and winter, you’ve probably noticed that the elements really have an effect on the appearance and longevity of your patio furniture.

What materials are your furniture made out of?

Certain materials will do fine in the rain and snow, and others will do best if you move them indoors. Plastic will be fine, so you don’t have to worry about protecting any plastic furniture. If your furniture is painted or upholstered, you’ll want to take extra precautions. If your furniture is powder coated, it will be less likely to rust or break down under the elements, but it will definitely last longer if you don’t leave it to be snowed on all winter!

Place them in storage

One of your available options is to put your patio furniture in storage. You can move them into a shed, attic, garage, or a spare room, you don’t necessarily have to go and get a storage unit just for your seasonal patio furniture. Placing them anywhere where they won’t get excessively wet will be adequate for the wet seasons.

Use covers

Another option, if you don’t have the space to store your patio furniture inside your home, is to purchase covers to go over them. If you have a deck, you can also place the furniture under the deck if you’d like, so they don’t have the direct attack of moisture, although we still recommend a cover! As far as covering your furniture goes, there are so many routes you could go! You could do something as simple as tying down a tarp over your furniture. Another option is to purchase storage bags that are specifically made for each type and shape of furniture you have. You just have to zip them around your furniture to keep them safe all winter long!

Treat them with a protectant

You can also purchase protectant materials to apply to the surface of your patio furniture. This can work, but it won’t last as long as any of the other two options! Look for fabric protectors for couches, and get a fresh coat of powder coating on any metal furniture to keep them waterproof.
